As lockdown restrictions ease, we are returning to worship in the church buildings. To keep things safe, services will be small, and simpler than the usual Holy Week Liturgies.
To reserve a place, please ring Marilyn on 824598. If we find that the Easter morning service is over capacity, we will add a second service.
Online Worship – Daily from 4 pm & Sunday at 9 am
Each day of Holy Week, there will be a short online meditation, based on the gospel set of for the day. These will be available here on the web page, and on the church facebook page from 4 pm each day. We will also post links on the facebook page for the Maundy Thursday liturgy from St Martin in the Fields. On Easter Day, the online Eucharist will be broadcast as usual at 9 am.
Morning Prayer continues daily on facebook at 8.30 am. The service begins with
The Triduum – All Saints, Waltham
Maunday Thursday – 7.30 pm
This is the night we remember the Last Supper and Jesus’ prayers in the Garden of Gethsemane. The eucharist ends without blessing, and in disarray as the disciples scatter before the crucifixion. To stay safe in Covid, the stripping of the altars will be more restrained: done by two or three people instead of the whole congregation. Because ‘time spent’ increased the risk of Covid transmission, we will not encourage you to stay for the watch — the hour of silent prayer that usually follows the service. But we will keep silence on the church grounds as we disperse. Some may wish to spend the hour’s watch walking or sitting outside.
Good Friday – 2 pm
The Good Friday liturgy is the most solemn liturgy of the year. We enter and depart in silence. When you enter, there will be a seating plan by the door (ring Marilyn on 824598 to reserve a seat). Please enter in silence, and take your seat. Your pew sheet will have your name on it so that you know you’ve found the right seat.
Usually on Holy Saturday, we scrub the church from top to bottom to prepare the church for Easter. There is no way to safely gather a group for cleaning and decorating this year. However, we still need your help to get ready for Easter. We are trying to fill the window ledges with as many jars of spring flowers as we can — daffodils, tulips, branches with spring blossom. The church will be open from 11 am – 2 pm. Please bring flowers ‘ready to go’ and leave them at the back of church.
Easter Day – 9 am
I wonder if you’ve seen the wonderful story going around of an 82 year old woman in Oregon, who has dressed up every week for church online. The photographs of her (link below) brought so much delight, that we’re going to try for a bit of bright joy in Waltham too. If you wish, you are encouraged to bring out your hats and bright colours and to dress up for Easter, just for the sheer joy of it. Our usual ‘come as you are’ policy remain in place — but this one day, we’re going to try for a bit of sartorial celebration.
If the 9 am service is overbooked, we will add a second service at 11 am.
Here are the photos of Dr Laverne Wimberly, all dressed up for church. Isn’t she wonderful?
